- Message from the Author:
- It seems that there is an ever widening gap between those who
- have been computing for some time, and those whose are just
- starting to explore the joys of computing and telecomputing.
-
- Fewer and fewer people are learning DOS as Windows affords a
- much easier way to get started. This program is a DOS program
- and as such is built with DOS users in mind. Nonetheless, the
- responsibility to make the program useable by everyone still
- lies with the author. Much of computing requires pre-knowledge
- of words and abbreviations foreign to beginners. Read as much as
- you can on the subject of graphics and you will get far more use
- out of this program.
-
- Just a footnote about my included examples. Due to the cost of uploading
- and downloading, I try to keep my demos and examples small and to the
- point, using clip art for backgrounds and limiting the number of frames
- etc. It is far from the capabilities of this program. If you have any
- artistic talent at all, you will be able to produce far better animation
- than the examples and demos that you will find in this program.
-
- Have fun, that's what it is all about and why I made this program.
- Activate learn-mode in the Options Menu for on-going help.
-
- Use the Help Button and print from line# to line# if you want,
- or print the entire manual using CONFIGIT.
-
- See \HELPDOCS\HELPINDX.DOC for master index of topics.
-
- IMPORTANT CONFIGURATION INSTRUCTIONS
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Minimum 286 with VGA Adapter and Microsoft compatible mouse required.
- If you do not have a math co-processor installed, the CAD module
- will be extremely slow on your machine. A 486 has a built-in
- math co-processor. The CAD module uses real number arithmetic
- to provide the necessary accuracy for the best quality of images.
- You need the line FILES=30 in your CONFIG.SYS (at least 30).
- You need Lots of free disk space. 5 to 10 meg or more.
- You need lots of conventional memory so load DOS and anything else
- you can High. If you intend on creating full screen animation
- sequences of more than 30 frames, you should use a ramdrive.
- (imitation disk made of extra ram) Your animation will run faster
- and smoother if you do. If not, your system will slow right down
- after about frame 30 as the frames are read from disk.
- (see your DOS manual on optimizing your system).
-
- ** C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE will speed up the program considerably. **
- ( NOT C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.SYS )
- See the end of this document for example config.sys file and
- autoexec.bat. If not set up correctly it will run SLOW!!
-
- The program can now be put anywhere providing CONFIGIT can find it
- in your PATH command. COMMAND.COM also. You may want to put the
- line SET COMSPEC= (where command.com is) if it is not in your path
- or if AniPaint can't find it. Use INSTALME.EXE to install the program.
-
- Using the mouse
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Throughout the program during tool use, Mouse Button 1 (usually the
- left mouse button) is used as enter or action. Mouse Button 2 is used
- as "move pen" (an expression for lifting any tool off the page) or
- Cancel. Both mouse buttons at the same time is "Done". Done with tool,
- done watching animation, home the cursor.
-
- Clicking Both mouse Buttons at the same time is done in a certain
- way to insure that -in the process of clicking both buttons- you
- don't press Button 1 and perform action (like drawing) or
- accidentally click button 2 when you intended to click both buttons.
- There are three ways to click both mouse buttons at the same time.
- 1) You hold down mouse button 1 and while holding, depress mouse
- button 2.
- 2) You hold down mouse button 2 and while holding it down you
- depress mouse button 1.
- 3) You try and hit them simultaneously.
-
- The last is a hit and miss method that leads to frustration.
- That is why we use method 1 or method 2.
-
- Double clicking is rarely used and never timed between presses, because
- some people find that method very awkward.
- So, if we want to terminate the current process such as drawing with
- a pen, and at the same time not cancel what we just did, we hold
- button 1 and press button two. This is a positive completion.
- If we do intend to end a process and either cancel or we are just
- finished and don't wish to draw any more lines, we hold button 2 and
- depress button 1.This is a neutral or negative completion.
-
- Some people may say, alright we got it the first time and we
- have done it that way for years, but in observing people learning
- this program, that seems to be the most difficult thing for some
- people to get the hang of.
- There are a few other slightly unusual mouse methods such as:
- 1) You can speed up a paste or paint operation by moving your mouse
- sideways back and forth.
- 2) You can answer Yes with Button 1 (unless the answer is important
- enough to warrant a key press thereby ruling out accidents)
- 3) You can answer No with Button 2.
- 4) Any mouse button or key, when finished reading a message, to
- continue.
-
- Some tools require a different approach due to the action they perform
- such as:
- 1) Mouse Button 1 to increment a number by clicking on it.
- 2) Mouse Button 2 to decrement a number by clicking on it.
- 3) Mouse Button 1 next choice or scroll forward.
- 4) Mouse Button 2 for previous choice or to scroll backward.
-
- Mouse button 1 is positive, mouse button 2 is negative.
-
- That is what it comes down to. If you keep that in mind and
- relate all processes to "Am I trying to perform an action that
- relates to positive, or am I trying to perform an activity that
- requires a negative action or reply." with a little practice it
- will become automatic for you. Very often when you look at the
- screen, you will find a help line of text telling you which button
- to press and what it does.
-
- Also, while inside a dialog box, and you are given a choice of
- options, you can click B1 on the light button to toggle it On/Off.
- If an option is suggested or the default, then the light button
- will be On and a check mark will appear beside it.
- By clicking B1 on the light or sentence beside it, you can select
- and deselect options.
-
- You can adjust the mouse with the Upper "Options" Menu. It can also
- go on a grid between 1 and eight pixels. 8 is maximum sensitivity.
-
- If you find the mouse is too slow, then go to your mouse directory
- C:\MOUSE and choose CPANEL and set your horizontal and vertical
- sensitivity. You can add the switch MOUSE /sn to autoexec.bat
- where n is a number between 5 and 100. You can also set mouse activity
- profiles 1..4 to move a greater distance when you move fast, smaller
- distance when you move slow. eg: lh C:\MOUSES\MOUSE /p3
- See your Microsoft Mouse users manual for more information. If you
- are not using a Microsoft mouse look for a setup or mouse control file
- in your mouse directory. Without mouse control set properly in your
- mouse directory and the delays set correctly in AniPaint or CONFIGIT,
- it is like drawing with your left hand if you are right handed. Set
- correctly, you should be able to write your name with the mouse.
- You may also want to clean your mouse. I use mouse /v100
- That is maximum vertical speed and distance of movement. Horizontal
- is fine the way it is for me. It also depends on the size of your screen.
-
- If you are using a different type of pointing device than a Microsoft
- mouse, look for a compatibility switch or compatibility information
- in your pointing device documentation. You may get a runtime error 200
- divide by 0. If so you may want to ask your dealer why.
-
- To get a fast start:
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- 1) Run INSTALME.EXE, it will create the path file _ANIPATH.PTH
- This will allow AniPaint to find the necessary files.
-
- 2) Run CONFIGIT.EXE to configure the program. Default, Learn-Mode On.
- 3) Run the demos in the program.
- 4) Run the Tutorials in the program under the "Help" Button (top right).
- 5) Press Mouse Button 1 on the "Files" button in the top left corner
- of the main file area, and select New.
- 6) Read the Manuals.
- 7) Click Both mouse buttons on each Icon for individual tool
- instructions.
-
- If you have a basic understanding of computer graphics,
- you will find hours of fun exploring options.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Computer Animation
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- This program is designed for animation of graphic images. It uses
- vector graphics,(2 and 3D CAD line and point locations) and bitmapped
- graphics, (VCX, PCX blocks of pixels in the Paint Studio). It has many
- features and may be confusing to a novice.
-
- I recommend you learn the Paint Studio first and get an understanding
- of how the mouse is used and some of the short cut keys on the keyboard.
- If you jump right into the 3D CAD without any background at all, you
- may become frustrated and give up.
-
- Once you understand how the program works you will be able to:
-
- * Zoom Full screen backgrounds in and out a little at a time to
- show movement towards and away. see Demos - Full Screen- 2
- or the 4th zip file 20 frame sequence.
- * Produce blocks of animation that can be placed on backgrounds.
- see SAMPLES.ACT for a playable animation script of examples.
-
- * Produce 320x200 Full Screen VGA frames for conversion to
- PCX and then to FLI or - 640x480+ FLC - format for sharing
- with others.
- * Write a script to reuse frames out of chronological order
- to stretch their quantity.
-
- * Add special effects and text to create presentations or
- instructional displays etc. see *.ACT
-
- * Put all the resources of this program together to produce
- moving backgrounds, superimposed transparencies of animated
- figures, special effects and rotatable photo-realistic objects.
-
- * If you are a serious animator and have the necessary equipment,
- you can work in 1024x768x256+ and capture 640x480x256+ frames,
- dump them to PCX, then to any number of available formats
- such as FLC using utilities designed for that purpose, creating
- high resolution photo-realistic animation.
-
- * Just a footnote concerning disk space.
- If you intend to do more than small little amusing bits, you
- need plenty of disk space. You will get nowhere trying to
- do animation with with 1 or 2 meg. 60 or 70 meg free will
- allow you the freedom to move. If you use VCX and Zip them,
- you get fantastic compression. It is 25% smaller than
- a zipped FLI made from PCX by DTA. (Dave's Targa Animator)
- Over 200% smaller than a Ping/Pong FLI sequence because Anipaint,
- by default, will Ping Pong a sequence with one set of clips.
- A zipped VCX is 20% smaller than a GIF or a zipped GIF.
- This is not a small amount we are talking about here,
- it is a full 20 % smaller and will load and paste in any
- resolution without prior conversion after it is unzipped.
-
- If you can find a file format beside JPEG that gives greater
- compression I would love to hear about it.
- (JPEG washes out the image in most cases. A Zipped VCX is
- 100 % preserved.)
- There is a new Russian compression utility called RAR or
- something that may compress better than Zip but I do not
- know if it is as reliable as Zip. My apologies to Yoshi,
- but LHA has mangled files for me in the past. It happened
- when I used the DOS Backup command on a LZH. It may not be
- his fault directly but it is not completely compatible with
- Backup if the file is larger than 1 floppy. It may have been
- fixed by now.
-
- Packaging a Sequence with PKUNZIP
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- !! This program will unpack ZIP files if you have PKUNZIP in your path
- command.
- It will also save your sequences neatly and packed better than
- converting them to FLI via PCX. All you do is ZIP them with
- PKZIP If AniPaint sees this extension *.ZIP it assumes it is a zipped
- file. The fourth file accompanying this program is a file like that.
- It is renamed to ZI_ so you wouldn't clutter up your default
- directory with 20 more files. Clips should be kept in your CLIPS
- directory. That is where they are automatically put when made.
-
- The program will rename it ASAMPLE.ZIP and unzip it into your CLIPS
- directory for you to edit, then display the sequence full screen.
- Run the Full Screen Demos, under the DEMOS Button to make it happen.
-
- When you are finished creating a sequence yourself, and you are finished
- your AniPaint session, you simply go to DOS and make a directory.
- Copy all the clips you want into it.
- Zip up that directory. Copy the ZIP file to your AniPaint directory,
- and then you can delete all the copies. This will dramatically
- increase your disk space.
- Here is a simple batch file that will do it for you
-
- PACK.BAT name of file
- *******************************************
- MD C;\ANI\MYSHOW
- COPY C:\ANI\CLIPS\CAD*.VCX C:\ANI\MYSHOW
- CD C:\ANI\MYSHOW
- PKZIP MYSHOW
- *******************************************
-
- When it is finished you simply use the copy command
- Copy MYSHOW.ZIP C:\ANI\newname.ZIP
-
- Then delete the old copies
- DEL C:\ANI\MYSHOW\*.*
-
- The sequence, now in ZIP format will remain protected, always intact,
- and extremely compressed. 20 frames unzipped 1.6 meg compressed 480k
- much less if it contains large blocks of similar color.
- Unzip them to your ramdrive in the CLIPS subdirectory if you have
- the room there. Clips load and run faster and smoother there.
- They disappear when you turn off your computer though, so be sure
- to use the backup option on exit, or zip them up and copy the zip
- to your harddrive.
-
- However, before you package an animated sequence, you need
- the freedom to move huge amounts of files from place to place
- and from one format to another. Once completed you can delete
- all your, almost, not quite, copies and transitional formats.
-
- Before you get to the last few points you should first:
-
- 1) Understand Clips (Clip Board Files or Animation Frames or Cells).
- * How to capture them.
- * Naming them with a 3 Letter Prefixes that will identify them
- numerically as a group. eg: CLP###.VCX In this example "CLP"
- is the Clip Prefix.
- * How to paste, edit, or manipulate them in a window or out.
-
- 2) Be able to display your clips in numerical order with the
- Projector Icon in the Paint Studio.
- * Or ACT2 Room where you arrange the order of appearance in a script.
- * Or the Drive-In Icon for Faster Machines in SVGA.
-
- 3) Understand 3D CAD and how to create, edit and manipulate
- realistic looking 3 Dimensional Objects.
- * Understand X,Y and Z coordinates.
- * Be able to use ZOOM, In and Out.
- * Be able to use Clips from the Paint Studio as transparencies,
- (Black Color #0 Background) prefix CLP (CLP###.VCX).
- * Create a series of Clips with the Projector Icon in the
- 3D CAD Studio. Clip Prefix "CAD" (CAD###.VCX).
-
- 4) Be able use the CAD options in a *.P3D window
- * POINTS.P3D is the name of the temporary file in the CAD studio.
- * Options will add backgrounds, switch from lines to
- filled gradient polygons etc.
- * Understand how to Bisect the plane XYZ at Z and how to copy
- objects in reverse order of appearance to the Objectboard.
- (vector clipboard)
-
- 5) Be able to put it all together using the Projector Icon
- in the 3D CAD studio.
- * Choose options to provide moving, shrinking, growing,
- backgrounds between frames.
- The background moving back (shrinking), or closer (larger),
- or to the left or right, fools the eye into believing it
- is the camera moving.
- * Rotate shrink and grow 3D objects on any axis a
- chosen number of degrees in any direction.
- * Add transparencies with matching Clip Count numbers.
-
- eg:
- Background name : VCXTEMP.VCX
- - Bitmap used as temporary picture file in Paint Studio
-
- 3D Object File : POINTS.P3D
- - Vector Point file used as temporary in 3D CAD Studio
-
- Target Frame after processing: CAD21.VCX
- - Bitmap Clip Board with prefix "CAD"
-
- Matching Transparency : CLP21.VCX
- - Bitmap Clip Board with CLP Prefix.
-
- First Background is displayed, then Objects rotated,
- then transparency added, then CAD21.VCX is captured.
- It can then be Antialiased (blended), or dither added (dot shading)
- any number of times.
-
- When the desired number of frames is reached, it will
- display the animation full screen or as chosen.
-
- * You can then save the rotation movements if you want.
- Suppose you find an XYZ rotation combination that imitates gravity,
- or a bounce or turn that you really like, you can save the settings
- and apply it again at a later date to a completely different
- object and get the same movement.
-
- * You can rename all the CAD clips to CLP to use them as backgrounds
- or transparencies and do the entire process again and again to layer
- your animation and have as many different things moving and animating
- all over the place as you want.
-
- Just as a cartoon like The Simpsons or Flintstones are not limited
- in the amount of animation they can put on screen at any one time.
-
- AniPaint 3D CAD can paste bitmaps directly into 3D vector. You
- don't need to rotate an object completely around to benefit from
- this. It could be a flat image. It will still benefit from the
- increased movement and size management that vector offers.
-
- An example of conventional bitmapped animation would be flipping
- pages that have a drawing on it that moves slightly each page.
-
- To calculate the frame speed, just count: one thousand
- two thousand, three thousand from the start frame to the top of
- the turn around loop. Then divide the number of frames by the
- number of seconds. The sequence will reverse at the top of
- the loop. If you have the fourth zip file containing the example
- 320x200x256 20 frame sequence, you will see that it throws 20+ full
- screen frames per second on a 50 Mz 486.
-
- You can get other equipment to convert the images to video if you
- are serious about it.
-
- Unlimited number of Frames :
- * You can calculate each frame at 64772 bytes per frame at 320x200
- full screen VGA. (SVGA is user defined size by computer speed).
- 90 frames zipped: approx 768,000 bytes. unzipped: 90 * 64772
-
- The entire process could take an experienced user 15 minutes
- to create an object, render it, and process 50 frames. A
- reasonable length short sequence. Even less if you have a
- library of objects already made and a good choice of PCX or
- VCX on file.
-
- You could then write a batch file to use VCX2PCX to size and
- dump the finished clips to PCX for conversion to FLI or FLC or
- add it to a script and write another, or process each frame
- with filters individually, etc.
-
- VCX2PCX works like this:
- - Make a subdirectory \SHOW
- - Copy your sequence, say CAD21.VCX...CAD51.VCX to \SHOW
- - Then on the commandline at DOS type
- VCX2PCX C:\ANI\SHOW\CAD*.VCX *.PCX
-
- -It then takes all the matching VCX files in \SHOW converts them to PCX
- in about 15 seconds. Then you could use DTA with :
- DTA c:\ani\show\cad*.PCX /ff /oMY.FLI /r1 to convert it to
- FLI. Substitute /r1 with /r? where ? is the number corresponding to
- the resolution you desire. (The captured frames would have been made
- at the same intended size previously of course, or resized with
- VCX2PCX by adding the switch /s640x480 or whatever size, to create FLC.)
-
- You could also write a batch file to do the entire process, call it
- RUN1.BAT and choose that Icon in the Paint Studio.
-
- You get VCX2PCX Free when you register. Registration is required for
- some of the other options as well.
-
- Fabricate that part using brass tubes or other metals, have it
- assemble, rotate and disassemble, or make your own commercials,
- or music video special effects, or create a great sequence for a
- trade show or other work related task, or just have a blast
- amazing your friends.
-
- AniPaint uses files with extension VCX for bitmaps. It has compatibility
- with Windows and programs like Paint Brush and Auto Cad ver 12 by
- importing and exporting PCX files. This option requires registration.
-
- There are many ways to create animation with this program.
- The CAD process will achieve excellent results.
-
- There are over 300 graphic tools, some with multiple processes.
- such as:
- * Import/Export PCX
- * Run FLI's
- * Capture palettes and partial palettes or cut and paste palettes
- * Capture a Font Set from another program or scanned page
- * Automatically Catalogue images, animation, and fonts.
- * Fade in and Fade out.
- * Draw or Paint images up to 2048x1024 in 256 colors.
- * ACT1 animation 100x80 zoomable and placeable on an image background
- up to 2048x1024 in 256 colors.
- * ACT2 320x200 animation full screen 320x200 VGA or on an image up to
- 20484x1024 in 256 colors.
- * Create a script file and play back your animation in presentation
- form.
- * Greyscale and retain the palette or Map the colors.
- * Un-Dither a 2 color scanned image back to greyscale then to 3D CAD.
- * Warp Images into different shapes. (Oh Noooo I'm melting...')
- If you like morfing, AniPaint has fast morf warping. CTRL-O and "*"
- "*" warps the previous clip into the current clip shape.
- * ACT1 animation now in any size.
- * VCX2PCX size & conversion for paid registered users.
- * New Compasses and Protractor for drawing arcs.
- * New Freehand Draw Tool with increased control.
- * New Fast Undo for speedier program operations.
- * New Fast Greyscale Color Sort and Map routines.
- * New Antialias filter. Soften or unjag without
- sorting or greyscaling.
- * PCX auto palette sort options under PCX pathmask button.
- * New Fast Undo/Redo And Autosave. Svga 256 only
- * Dither on top of image and retain the image color.
- * Metallic brass, nickel, steel, lead, aluminum, gold etc. for
- 3D complex objects.
- * Full screen animation processor under the Projector Icon
- in the 3D CAD studio.
- * Lay on transparencies like the pros.
- * Does the laundry, the dishes and will rotate the tires on your car.
- (just kidding about the last one :->)
-
- If you like to draw, or you like drafting, or are an animator,
- or an educator or like to make videos, or just want to get into
- the computer graphic arts, you should enjoy this program.
-
- At first it will probably seem confusing. Learning the file types
- and how the clip boards work. Mastering some of the more
- technical and specialized tools and effects. What's the best
- tool to use at which particular moment. Play around with it
- and you will soon be cutting and pasting palettes together
- to make specialized textures like Corinthian leather or
- 14 karat gold. Bluescreening in photographic backgrounds,
- simulating gravity or having objects twirling and exploding out
- in all directions at the same time.

-
- If it is not working as you would expect, or if something seems
- terribly wrong or inconsistent, you may have a corrupt copy.
- Copies get corrupted during transfer sometimes or incomplete
- copies occasionally get uploaded. If this happens, write me for
- a proper working copy. Don't give incomplete copies away only give
- your original compressed copy or one created by CONFIGIT.
-
- If you are running Windows, Windows steals cpu time checking for keyboard
- and mouse activity. In case you task switch or get a fax or whatever.
- Because of this the program slows down its operation. Also if you have
- sound On, you will hear little auditory clues during program operation.
- Little clicks signifying screen capture and that sort of thing. If you
- get a file error you will hear a beep. If Windows is running, and it
- steals some cpu time during the delay span of a click, it will turn
- that click into a beep. Just ignore it and if it bothers you because it
- is too loud for an office environment, disable sound, or run the program
- from DOS without Windows running in the background. It runs at least
- 30 % faster that way. Auditory clues are very helpful a least to begin
- with.
-
- Using AniPaint
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- 1) Click on the Upper "Files" Button or the "FS" button beside the
- Filenames/Directory toggle button.
-
- It will prompt you for a pathmask. Accept the default and it
- will create a file list containing the PCX on your default Drive.
-
- 2) Click mouse button 1 on the filename and the screen goes all grey
- while the PCX is converted to VCX, then it loads into a window.
-
- 3) Push Buttons. Almost everything that looks like a button does
- something.
-
- For a file list containing examples:
-
- 1) Click on the Path Line (above the pathmask button) to enter a pathmask.
- 2) Enter the pathmask *.CFG
- 3) Click on EXAMP256.CFG
- A saved workspace loads. A file list appears on the left side.
- (Screen size above VGA 320x200) (Use the top left corner button for VGA)
- Click on the small file folder beside the name to load the file
- into a window.
- 4) Push buttons. Each type of file has its own options contained
- in dialog boxes. Start with Learn-Mode On in CONFIGIT OPTIONS
- *.CFG also contain mouse setting information so you may have to
- readjust your delays in a HELP button dialog box.
-
- The Zoom and Color Buttons work with Both mouse Buttons, right and
- left. One goes one way and the other goes in the reverse direction.
-
- Also whenever you see a black box with white numbers in it,
- __________
- like this | 21 | x--------- Click here in a number
- |__________| dialog box to enter the
- ^ ^ number on the command line.
- | |------------ Click here to decrease or
- | increase by 10.
- |
- Click here to decrease or increase by 1
-
- If it zooms through too fast, set the mouse delay with the mouse
- set icon in any dialog box.
-
- Optimizing your System for AniPaint
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- A good system would be a 486 66Mhz with 8 meg of RAM, an SVGA Monitor
- with a VESA compatible display adapter with 1 meg of on-board memory.
-
- If you have a older system, try the DOS Shell in Windows. It will at
- least provide SMARTDRV.EXE disk cache and maybe some ems memory.
-
- AniPaint does not require Extended or Expanded memory but it's operation
- is enhanced. A minimum 286 CPU is required. Anything less is too slow.
-
- Your math coprocessor will be used if one exists. If one doesn't, I hope
- you are a very patient person. A 486 has one built in.
-
- If Expanded memory (EMS) is available AniPaint will automatically load
- the program itself into it and run from there. (approx. 1.5 meg needed,
- autodetected at runtime - LIM standard).
-
- Microsoft Windows can create EMS from your Hard Disk C:. It will
- however lessen your free space on C: so make plenty of space available.
- I load SMARTDRV.EXE and run AniPaint from DOS. See my setup at the end
- of this document.
-
- Make as much space on drive C: available as possible. What you can do
- depends on how much space you have. The program will not operate
- correctly if drive C: becomes full. AniPaint uses your hardrive as a
- virtual disk when your ramdrive becomes full or when it is not available.
-
- You cannot run AniPaint from floppies.
-
- Only use resolutions that you know are O.K. to use with your monitor. See
- your monitor documentation.
-
- Autodetection defaults to 640x480 16 color VGA mode.
- I highly recommend 640x480x256 SVGA mode for normal use.
-
- Read DRIVERS.DOC for help with drivers.
-
- AniPaint may conflict with memory resident programs. Trial and error is
- the only way to find out. If the system locks up, reboot and "rem" them
- out. You may want to create a batch file that uses one copy of CONFIG.SYS
- and AUTOEXEC.BAT for AniPaint. See your DOS manual.
-
- Use the FULL SCREEN option in the Paint Studio when in 320x200 mode.
- The screen is too small for any serious work. You may be better off
- using 640x480x16 then switching the palettes later to 256 color if
- you are confined to standard VGA.
-
- Anipaint uses VCX. They are device independent bitmaps. That means
- you can capture an area in 16 color mode and paste it in 256 color mode.
-
- Older PCX files or 16 color or less, are converted to 2 colors with a 256
- color palette. In 16 color mode, only the first 16 palette color entries
- are visible.
-
- If you have a machine with a CPU speed of less than 50 Mhz, see Speeding
- up the Program at the end of SCREENRM.DOC.
-
- See your DOS manual on Optimizing your System for more info.
-
- Remember Use INSTALME to install and CONFIGIT to configure the program
- correctly. (Type INSTALME at DOS in the ANIPAINT or selected directory,
- where INSTALME should be.)

- There are other files created when AniPaint is used but the above
- should be there to insure proper operation of AniPaint
-
- Important If any files are missing, you have a corrupted copy and
- should write me for a complete copy. Once registered, only use
- CONFIGIT to move or give AniPaint. It will not work otherwise.
- =====================================================================
-
- Here is the directory structure created by CONFIGIT
-
- C:\ANIPAINT
- DEMOS - | - HELPDOCS
- / | \
- STAMPS OBJECTS CLIPS FONTS PALETTES
-
- All are subdirectories of C:\ANIPAINT or whatever default you choose.
-
- DEMOS - Will contain the Demo Files
-
- STAMPS - Contains the Clip Art
-
- CLIPS - Your Clip Board Files will be put here if you use C:
- (If a ramdrive is available ?:\CLIPS will be created)
-
- OBJECTS - Sample Vector graphic PNT files
-
- FONTS - Sample Fonts created by the program.
-
- PALETTES - Menu and Sample Color Palettes created by the program
-
- HELPDOCS - Help files and Documentation.
-
- If you change this structure the program will not operate correctly.
- All files should be left where they are put by CONFIGIT.
-
-
- Important Notes for Uploading to BBS's
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- This program should be of valuable use for years to come.
- However, BBS's are more and more insisting that files contained in the
- program be less than 6 mos or so old. If you find that the BBS you
- wish to upload this program to does not have AniPaint, but the age
- of the files do not meet their requirements then you should
- phone or write me for a current version.
- Address at the end.
-
- Also when you upload to some boards they check their lists for
- duplicates. Due to a flaw in the detection logic the second zip file
- almost always fails the quick upload test and gets pegged as a
- duplicate. Not to worry, your sysop will no doubt be well aware of
- this problem and group them all together when the proper sorting is
- done. If you make sure that the lines file #1 of 3 FIle #2 of 3
- and file # 3 of 3 there should be no problem.
-
- Important!
- If you want the program to work after you give it to someone,
- give your original compressed copy or use PACK for giving in
- CONFIGIT. It will make one large or three small groups ready
- for compression.
